McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act: Homeless Liaison
Parents and Students of Lowndes County School District If your family lives in any of the following situations:
- In a shelter
- In a car, bus, train station, park, public space or similar setting
- Doubled up with other people due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or similar reason
- Living in motels or campgrounds due to lack of alternative accommodations
- Living in places that are not regular sleeping accommodations for people such as abandoned buildings or substandard housing
- Youth not residing with their legal parent or guardian
- Runaway youth
- Without a regular place to stay at night
Your school-age children may qualify for certain rights and protections under the federal McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act.
Your eligible children have the right to:
- The right to stay in their school even if they move out of the school district. Students can also finish the current school year in their school even if they find permanent housing during that school year.
- The right to immediately enroll, attend classes and participate fully in school activities in the local school in the area where they are living, without proof of residency, immunization records, or other medical records, school records, or other documents.
- The right to the elimination of barriers for student's full participation in school and school relate activities.
- The right to get transportation to their "school of origin" provided or arranged by the school district, or a joint effort between school districts.
- The right to attend school district provided pre-school programs.
- The right to access to all school services including free school meals, services for English language learners, special education, Title I services, vocational/technical education, gifted and talented services, and before and after school care, etc. as needed.
- The right to have disagreements with the school settled quickly and go to the school they choose while disagreements are settled.
